EasyJet Flight Makes Emergency Landing

An easyJet flight from Cyprus to the UK had to make an emergency landing in Turkey after passengers and crew noticed a strong smell of smoke in the cabin. The incident happened on Sunday, June 15, when the flight, which took off from Paphos, Cyprus, was en route to Bristol Airport in England.

According to flight tracking data from AirLive, the aircraft — an Airbus A320 — was cruising at an altitude of around 36,000 feet when the issue arose. Just over an hour into the journey, the plane changed direction west of Turkey and began descending rapidly. The pilot made the decision to divert the flight and land in Izmir, a city on the western coast of Turkey.

In a statement, an easyJet spokesperson confirmed that the diversion was due to a “technical issue” which resulted in a noticeable smell of smoke in the cabin. Although no fire was reported on board, the smell was enough to raise concern among passengers and crew, prompting the emergency landing as a safety measure.

“The aircraft landed safely and was met by emergency services in Izmir as a precaution,” the spokesperson said.

All passengers were able to leave the plane normally once it landed. There were no reports of injuries or medical issues. The airline made arrangements to provide hotel accommodations and meals for the affected travelers while they waited for a replacement aircraft.

Later that day, a different aircraft was scheduled to complete the flight and take passengers to their original destination in Bristol.

EasyJet issued a statement saying: “Flight EZY2902 from Paphos to Bristol was diverted to Izmir due to a technical issue that caused a smoke smell in the cabin. The aircraft landed safely and was met by emergency services as a standard safety measure. Passengers disembarked normally and were provided with hotel accommodation and meals. They will continue their journey to Bristol on another aircraft later today.”

The airline thanked passengers for their patience and reassured them that safety is their top priority. While the cause of the smoke smell is still being investigated, early indications suggest it was related to a minor technical fault and not a fire.

Passengers on board expressed relief that the crew handled the situation calmly and professionally. One traveler shared on social media that the cabin crew “remained composed and kept everyone informed,” helping to ease fears during the unexpected diversion.

This incident adds to the growing number of precautionary landings airlines have been making worldwide in recent months due to suspected technical faults. However, aviation experts note that such diversions are routine and serve to protect passengers and crew from any potential risks, even when the issue is minor.

As of now, easyJet has not reported any further delays related to this incident. The airline is expected to continue operations on the Paphos-Bristol route as usual.
