The announcement came during a live press event held on June 26 at Ovation Hollywood. The final honorees were chosen from hundreds of nominations by a selection panel that met on June 20.

Before Deepika, Mindy Kaling became the first South Asian woman to get the star earlier this year. The only other Indian to be honoured was Sabu Dastagir, included in the Walk of Fame class in the 1960s.
