Chinese Fighter Jet Enters Japanese Airspace, Tokyo Responds
Japan and China have accused each other of violating airspace near a disputed island group in the East China Sea. Reports suggest that a Chinese helicopter first entered Japanese airspace, prompting a protest from Tokyo. However, when China did not respond positively, Tokyo reacted by entering Chinese airspace in return.
This back-and-forth has heightened tensions between the two countries. The disputed airspace lies near a group of islands controlled by Japan but also claimed by China.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that on Saturday, a helicopter from one of four Chinese coast guard vessels took off and entered Japanese airspace around the Senkaku Islands, staying for about 15 minutes. Japan lodged a protest with Beijing over the incident.
Japan’s Defense Ministry also reported that fighter jets were scrambled in response to the Chinese helicopter’s intrusion. It added that China frequently sends coast guard ships and aircraft into the waters and airspace surrounding the islands, often harassing Japanese vessels in the region.
