With air quality continuing to deteriorate, the district administration has imposed temporary pollution-control restrictions across Balasore municipality and other NAC and municipal areas. Officials said the decision was taken after a steady rise in the Air Quality Index (AQI), which posed growing health risks, especially for children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems.
Why the Restrictions Were Imposed
Over the past few days, pollution levels in Balasore have shown a consistent upward trend. Dust from construction activities, vehicular emissions, open waste burning and coal use in eateries were identified as key contributors. To prevent further deterioration and safeguard public health, the district administration decided to act immediately.
What Measures Have Been Taken
As part of the control strategy, the following steps have been enforced for seven days:
Construction activities suspended daily from 6 pm to 10 am
Demolition and earthwork completely banned within municipal limits
Water sprinkling on roads at least three times a day to control dust, including national highways
Ban on open burning of garbage
Prohibition on coal-based cooking in roadside dhabas
Restriction on entry of heavy trucks and vehicles into city and ULB areas
Brick kilns barred from operating without valid permission
These orders have been issued under BNSS Section 163(2) and violations will invite strict action.
Who Will Supervise Implementation
To ensure the guidelines are followed on the ground, the Sub-Collectors of Balasore and Nilagiri have been directed to conduct daily inspections. Local municipal authorities and enforcement teams will assist in monitoring compliance across all affected areas.
The administration has urged citizens, businesses and contractors to cooperate, stating that these short-term restrictions are necessary to bring pollution levels under control and protect public health.
