Apple to Shift Entire US-Bound iPhone Production from China to India by 2026
Apple plans to move the assembly of all iPhones destined for the U.S. market from China to India as early as next year, according to a report by the Financial Times. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the move comes amid escalating U.S.-China trade tensions, pushing Apple to accelerate its supply chain diversification. By the end of 2026, Apple aims to manufacture over 60 million iPhones annually in India for U.S. consumers.
High Tariffs Drive Apple Away from China
Currently, Apple heavily relies on Chinese manufacturing partners such as Foxconn. However, rising tariffs—introduced under President Donald Trump’s administration and now reaching more than 100% on some Chinese imports—have made Chinese assembly increasingly costly for the tech giant.
India Positioned as Apple’s Next Major Manufacturing Hub
India offers a more favorable trade environment, with a paused reciprocal tariff of 26% compared to China’s steep duties. Moreover, India is actively negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with Washington. U.S. Vice President JD Vance recently visited New Delhi and described the ongoing talks as showing “very good” progress. India is now on track to become the first country to finalize a trade deal with the U.S., potentially helping Apple avoid additional tariffs while expanding its manufacturing footprint.
