Ahmedabad Plane Crash
Tragedy struck on Thursday when an Air India flight carrying 242 people crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, resulting in 241 confirmed fatalities. The airline confirmed the grim news in an official statement, adding that only one passenger survived the crash.
“We are deeply saddened to report that out of the 242 individuals on board, 241 have lost their lives. The lone survivor, a British citizen of Indian descent, is currently receiving medical treatment,” Air India stated.
Flight AI-171, en route to London Gatwick, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 p.m. IST. Mere minutes later, the aircraft went down in a residential neighborhood near BJ Medical College, igniting a massive fire and prompting an urgent response from emergency services.
Air India provided a breakdown of the nationalities of those on board: 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were from the United Kingdom, seven were Portuguese, and one was Canadian.
In a social media update, the airline announced the establishment of support centers to assist grieving families.
“To support the loved ones of those aboard flight AI-171, Friends & Relatives Assistance Centres have been set up at airports in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and Gatwick. These centers are helping coordinate travel and provide emotional and logistical support,” the post read.
