Government Increases Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel by ₹2

On April 8, 2025, the Central Government increased the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre, according to a notification from the Ministry of Finance. With this hike, the excise duty on petrol now stands at ₹13 per litre, and on diesel at ₹10 per litre.

Will Consumers Pay More for Petrol and Diesel?

Despite the hike in duty, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that retail fuel prices will remain unchanged for now. This means that consumers will not see an immediate price increase at the pump.

The Ministry explained that the hike will be adjusted against the recent drop in international crude oil prices, which had made room for a price cut. Hence, instead of reducing fuel prices, the excise hike will absorb that margin.

No Immediate Hike in Fuel Prices, Says Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri reassured the public that the price hike will not be passed on to consumers—at least for now. He added that Indian oil marketing companies operate with a 45-day inventory cycle, and decisions on fuel prices are made based on international market conditions.

“There will be no increase in fuel prices at this time,” Puri said.
“If global prices continue to drop, we can expect future reductions in retail fuel rates.”

Why This Move Matters

This decision comes during a period of global oil market volatility, with crude oil prices fluctuating around $60 per barrel. The Indian government is leveraging the dip in global rates to boost revenue without affecting retail consumers directly.
