A modern engineering marvel, the 2.07-km-long New Pamban Bridge strengthens Rameswaram’s connectivity and boosts maritime infrastructure in India.
In a significant boost to India’s infrastructure and transport development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. This state-of-the-art bridge is India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge, replacing the iconic Pamban Bridge built over a century ago in 1914.
Located across the Palk Strait, the 2.07-kilometre-long structure connects Rameswaram Island to mainland India. The project is not just a symbol of technological progress but also a reflection of India’s growing capabilities in engineering and innovation.
A New Era in Sea Bridge Technology
The new vertical-lift bridge is designed to raise its central section vertically, allowing ships and boats to pass underneath—a feature that greatly enhances maritime accessibility. This functionality was demonstrated live during the inauguration. An Indian Coast Guard (ICG) boat successfully passed under the raised bridge, followed by the first train crossing, showcasing both safety and operational readiness.
Constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways, the bridge is built to withstand harsh marine conditions, carry heavier trains, and allow for faster movement compared to the old structure.
The vertical lift mechanism is inspired by globally renowned bridges such as the Tower Bridge in London, the Øresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden, and the Golden Gate Bridge in the U.S.—placing India among countries with advanced bridge technology.
PM MODI and other leaders
Prime Minister Modi was joined at the inauguration by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi. The dignitaries jointly flagged off the first train to cross the bridge, a moment that captured the significance of this engineering feat.
Earlier in the day, Minister Vaishnaw also hoisted the BJP flag at the bridge site to mark the BJP’s Foundation Day and shared a post praising the spirit of “Nation First, Always First.” Governor RN Ravi also visited the famous Swamy Temple in Rameswaram before attending the launch.
From Legacy to Innovation
The original Pamban Bridge, built by British engineers in 1914, was India’s first sea bridge. It featured a Scherzer rolling lift span and served as a crucial lifeline for pilgrims, tourists, and trade between Rameswaram and the mainland.
However, over the decades, increasing transportation demands and the effects of the harsh marine environment made it necessary to replace the old structure. In 2019, the Indian government approved the construction of a technologically advanced replacement—taller by 3 metres and built with better materials to ensure durability and safety.
Bridge Benefits:
First vertical-lift sea bridge in India
2.07 km in length across the Palk Strait
Built for higher speed and load capacity
Improved clearance for maritime traffic
Designed to operate in a corrosive coastal climate
Built by RVNL, under the Ministry of Railways
The New Pamban Bridge is expected to boost religious tourism, improve trade routes, and provide a reliable rail link to Rameswaram, one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage sites.
