China’s military carried out a second day of military exercises around Taiwan on Wednesday. The drills, called “Strait Thunder-2025A,” included live-fire strikes in the East China Sea and blockade operations near important shipping lanes around the island. China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) tested its ability to control key areas and conduct precision strikes.

According to PLA officials, the exercises involved missile strikes on simulated targets such as key ports and energy facilities. The drills took place in the Taiwan Strait, with additional naval and air force exercises conducted by the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong to Taiwan’s east.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry strongly criticized the military activities, calling them “aggressive, provocative, and irresponsible.” The island’s military remains on high alert to counter any threats.

Why Did It Happen?

China frequently conducts military exercises around Taiwan, which it considers a breakaway province. Beijing has increased these drills in recent years, claiming they help prepare for a possible future military action against Taiwan.

This latest round of exercises began just days after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Asia, where he vowed to counter China’s military pressure on Taiwan. The U.S. condemned the drills, calling them “irresponsible threats” that destabilize the region.

China has not disclosed the exact locations of its live-fire drills, but its Maritime Safety Administration issued a warning restricting vessel movements near Zhejiang province. The exercises near Taiwan’s east focused on gaining air superiority and strengthening China’s ability to block Taiwan from outside help.

Taiwan’s Response

Taiwan’s government accused China of using military threats to pressure the island and disrupt regional stability. In a statement, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said Beijing’s actions threaten global security and violate international norms. Taiwan continues to strengthen its defense capabilities in response to China’s military aggression.

The U.S. Reaction

The U.S. State Department condemned China’s military intimidation, warning that such actions escalate tensions and threaten peace in the Taiwan Strait. The U.S. remains Taiwan’s most significant international supporter and continues to provide military assistance to help defend the island.
