Why Has the Bandh Been Called?

The protest follows the government’s notification issued on November 21, 2025 regarding the new Labour Code.

Trade unions allege that:

  • The reforms weaken job security

  • Employers may get greater flexibility in hiring and firing

  • Workers’ rights and social security protections could be diluted

  • The policy primarily benefits corporates under the “ease of doing business” framework

In Odisha, organisations have also raised additional concerns such as rising electricity bills, job cuts, and issues related to MGNREGA.

What Services May Be Affected?

 Transport

Bus and truck services may face disruption. Movement of goods vehicles could also be affected.

 Banking Services

Bank employees’ unions, including clerical staff associations, have decided to join the strike.
As a result, cash-related transactions may remain suspended in several banks. Counter services are likely to be affected, and customers may face inconvenience in deposits and withdrawals.

 Schools & Colleges

Educational institutions may remain closed in some regions.

Markets & Petrol Pumps

Shops, markets, and petrol pumps may remain shut in certain areas depending on local participation.

The Congress party has extended support to the bandh, adding political weight to the protest. The overall impact will depend on participation levels across different states.
