Agni-3 Ballistic Missile Successfully Tested from Odisha Coast; Know How It Is Different from Agni-2

Chandipur (Odisha): India successfully tested the Agni-3 ballistic missile from the Chandipur Integrated Test Range off the Odisha coast, strengthening the country’s long-range strike capability.

Agni-3 is a surface-to-surface ballistic missile and is capable of carrying nuclear warheads. The missile is already inducted into the Indian Armed Forces.

Key capabilities of Agni-3:

  • Range: More than 3,000 km.

  • Payload capacity: Up to 1.5 tonnes.

How Agni-3 is different from Agni-2? 

  • Agni-2 range: Around 2,000 km

  • Agni-2 payload: About 1 tonne

  • Agni-3 offers longer reach and higher payload capacity

Defence officials said the launch was carried out under strict safety protocols and all mission objectives were achieved successfully.

The surface-to-surface missile was launched by personnel of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) using a mobile launcher as part of a routine training drill.

During the launch, the 17-metre-long missile’s flight path and key performance parameters were tracked and analysed in real time using radars positioned along India’s eastern coast. The monitoring was further supported by telemetry and electro-optical systems.

Officials said two naval vessels stationed near the designated impact area successfully observed and recorded the terminal phase of the missile’s flight, confirming the success of the exercise.
