Mumbai: A chartered aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reportedly crashed while attempting to land at Baramati Airport on Tuesday morning. Pawar was en route to Baramati to participate in a series of political engagements related to local body election campaigning.
Preliminary information suggests that the incident occurred during the landing process. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the crash was caused by a mechanical failure, loss of control during approach, or any other technical issue.
Footage from the crash site indicates that the aircraft veered off course and fell into an open area, following which it caught fire. Emergency response teams, including local authorities, medical staff, and rescue personnel, were immediately dispatched to the location to carry out relief and rescue operations.
Unconfirmed reports later claimed that Ajit Pawar and six other occupants of the aircraft lost their lives in the incident. As per early inputs attributed to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft faced serious technical complications while making its final descent around 8:45 am. The pilot is said to have lost control during the landing attempt, resulting in a crash landing and a subsequent fire. Sources also indicated that the aircraft was making a second attempt to land at Baramati Airport when the accident occurred.
Local witnesses stated that the injured were quickly moved to a nearby medical facility following the crash. However, authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming casualties.
Ajit Pawar is a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and is currently serving as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra along with Devendra Fadnavis. The reported incident has led to widespread concern across political circles, with many awaiting an official clarification from the government and aviation authorities.
Investigations are underway, and further details are expected once officials release a formal briefing.
