Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has criticized the upcoming visit of Usha Vance, wife of US Vice President JD Vance, calling it an attempt to show power. Egede accused the United States of interfering in Greenland’s affairs, linking the visit to former US President Donald Trump’s past desire to take control of the island.
Egede warned that the visit should not be misunderstood, adding that if other allied nations do not speak out, US pressure on Greenland could increase.
Usha Vance’s Visit
Usha Vance is set to visit Greenland from March 27 to 29, accompanied by one of her children. She will tour historical sites and participate in Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s famous dogsled race. According to her office, the visit is meant to celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity. However, the timing and political context have raised concerns.
Trump’s Interest in Greenland
During his first term, Donald Trump suggested buying Greenland, but the idea was rejected by both Greenland and Denmark. Now, after returning to the White House, Trump has repeated his belief that the US will eventually control Greenland, arguing that it is a matter of national security.
Why Greenland Matters
Strategic Location – Greenland lies between North America and Europe, making it a key point for military and trade routes in the North Atlantic.
Military Importance – The island hosts the Pituffik Space Base (Thule Air Base), crucial for missile warning, space surveillance, and Arctic defense.
Rare-Earth Minerals – Greenland has vast deposits of rare-earth elements, essential for smartphones, electric vehicles, and renewable energy technologies.
Arctic Control & Security – As climate change opens new shipping routes in the Arctic, the US wants to counter Russia and China’s growing influence in the region.
Energy & Resource Potential – Greenland has untapped oil, gas, and mineral reserves, making it a valuable asset for energy security.
Geopolitical Influence – Controlling or influencing Greenland strengthens US dominance in the Arctic Council and global strategic affairs.
Scientific & Climate Research – Greenland’s ice sheets provide crucial data for climate change studies, helping the US lead in environmental research.
Rising Political Tensions
Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark, and many of its people prefer independence over US control. The visit by Usha Vance, along with National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, has sparked fears of increased US involvement. In January, Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., also visited Greenland, further adding to speculations about US intentions.
While the US says Usha Vance’s visit is about cultural appreciation, Greenland’s leaders see it as a political move. Egede has urged allied nations to support Greenland’s position and resist what he calls US aggression.
