 Chapter 1

Reason behind our unhappiness

Hindu scriptures say, if a person suffers from health problems and someone who has debts and lives abroad (i.e. lives outside his motherland), then he can never be happy.

Elaboration—

Health Problems

How can one be happy with health problems? Suppose right now you are suffering from a severe migraine or headache or fever or any kind of health problem (painful condition) and some divine person asks you to choose one thing: 10 million US dollars or health treatment. What would you prefer? Obviously instant relief from pain. If one suffers from illnesses, their ability to enjoy life diminishes, leading to suffering and distress. Ancient texts like the Charaka Samhita and Ayurveda stress that health is the foundation of a fulfilling life. There is also a saying in English, “Health is wealth.”

Burden of Debt

Debt is considered a major obstacle to peace and prosperity in Hindu philosophy. The Manusmriti and other scriptures emphasize that being in debt is a form of bondage that leads to mental stress, loss of respect, and difficulty in performing one’s duties. Hinduism encourages financial discipline and self-sufficiency, as excessive debt can lead to misery and dependency on others.

Living Abroad

The idea of living away from one’s motherland is often associated with emotional and spiritual suffering. The loss of cultural roots, separation from family, and unfamiliar environments can lead to feelings of isolation and dissatisfaction. Traditional Hindu wisdom suggests that a person finds true happiness when they are connected to their native culture, traditions, and community. When people from one country migrate to another country, even from one city to another in their own country, for education, better job opportunities, or business, they too face racist comments, abuse, and many other things from netizens. Forget about the problems of refugees; that is very heartbreaking.

While modern perspectives acknowledge that people can find happiness anywhere, Hindu scriptures emphasize that health, financial stability, and cultural roots for the foundation of a content life. If any of these are compromised, an individual may struggle to experience lasting happiness. This wisdom continues to hold relevance today, as these three factors significantly influence a person’s quality of life.

Take care of your health, control your greed, wish well for others, and do charity — these are the true secrets to happiness.
