New Delhi: NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Tuesday elected as the 15th Vice President of India after securing a decisive victory over the opposition INDIA bloc’s candidate, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy.

Radhakrishnan, 67, received 452 votes, while his rival Reddy polled 300 votes, according to Returning Officer PC Mody, who declared the result and said it would be formally communicated to the Election Commission. The electoral college for the vice presidential election comprised 781 MPs from both Houses of Parliament.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier appealed for Radhakrishnan’s unanimous election. Following the announcement, leaders of the NDA hailed his victory as a reaffirmation of the alliance’s unity.

A seasoned BJP leader and currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra, Radhakrishnan becomes the third leader from Tamil Nadu to hold the second-highest Constitutional office in the country. Belonging to the Goundar-Kongu Vellalar OBC community, his nomination was seen as a move to strengthen NDA’s outreach in southern India.

The Vice Presidential election began at 10 am and continued until 5 pm, with a high voter turnout. According to Congress, 315 opposition MPs cast their votes in the polls.

Radhakrishnan’s election comes at a politically significant moment, as he steps into a role that not only presides over the Rajya Sabha but also plays a crucial part in shaping parliamentary proceedings.
