UK’s Support to Ukraine

The UK government has announced it will give Ukraine another £450 million in military support. This was shared during a big meeting of 50 countries held in Brussels, led by the UK and Germany.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey said the goal is to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine. He said the UK and its allies need to keep helping Ukraine defend itself.

What’s in the new military package?

  • Hundreds of thousands of drones

  • Anti-tank mines

  • Repairs and maintenance for military vehicles and equipment

  • Radar systems

Out of the £450 million, the UK is giving £350 million. The rest is coming from Norway and other partners through a UK-led international fund. £160 million will be used just to fix vehicles and gear already sent to Ukraine.

This package is part of a larger £4.5 billion the UK promised Ukraine in January. Healey said this is the biggest amount of aid any country has given Ukraine this year.

Support from Other Countries

Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said his country will give €11 billion more to Ukraine by 2029. He said peace in Ukraine isn’t likely soon, and Russia needs to see that Ukraine can keep fighting.

Overall, Ukraine’s allies promised €21 billion (£18.2 billion) in new aid, which is a record high.

What About the US?

The US Defence Secretary, Pete Hegseth, didn’t come to the meeting in person but joined online. Germany said this was just due to his busy schedule.

There are signs that the US is stepping back a bit from leading Europe’s defence efforts. Since Donald Trump became president again in January, the UK has been taking a bigger role.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister said the US is still their most important partner and continues to send help.

Peacekeeping Force?

Leaders also talked about maybe sending peacekeepers to Ukraine in the future. But many questions remain—what would these peacekeepers do? Would they just watch, or would they fight too?

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said it’s not yet clear what such a force would really do, and more discussion is needed.

What’s Happening on the Ground?

  • Fighting has gotten worse in the past week, with 30% more attacks along the front lines.

  • Ukraine says Russia is planning a new big attack with thousands of troops.

  • Ukrainian forces are now fighting inside Russia, in regions like Belgorod and Kursk—though Russia has taken back most of that land.

What About Trump?

Trump once said he could end the war in a day, but so far, that hasn’t happened. In March, he asked for a ceasefire, and Ukraine agreed—but Putin refused.

Now, Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, is in Russia to talk to Putin. But Russia says not to expect any major results.
