U.S. Weapons for Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States will send more weapons to Ukraine, mainly for defense, to help the country fight off growing Russian attacks.
The decision follows a pause in some U.S. military aid to Ukraine, which had raised concerns in Kyiv. Ukrainian officials warned that the delay could weaken their ability to protect against airstrikes and defend key positions. The move also sparked criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans in the U.S.
“We’re going to send more weapons. We have to,” Trump told reporters during a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. “They’re getting hit hard now. These will mostly be defensive weapons.”
Later, the U.S. Defense Department confirmed it would follow Trump’s orders and send more defensive weapons to Ukraine. The Pentagon added that this support would help Ukraine defend itself as diplomatic efforts continue to push for a lasting peace. However, it gave no details about the types of weapons being sent.
On Friday, Trump had said Ukraine would need Patriot missiles, but he did not mention them again in Monday’s comments. Ukraine has repeatedly asked for more Patriot missile systems to protect its cities from increased Russian airstrikes.
After speaking with Trump on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said they agreed to boost Ukraine’s ability to “defend the sky.” He also mentioned plans for joint defense production, military purchases, and investments.
Meanwhile, Germany said it is discussing the purchase of Patriot systems to support Ukraine’s air defense needs.
