Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump has nominated his longtime aide Sergio Gor, currently serving as the Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, as the next U.S. Ambassador to India.

In a Friday social media post, Trump praised Gor, 38, as a “great friend, who has been at my side for many years.”

Announcing the decision, Trump said:

“I am pleased to announce that I am promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India.”

The president also revealed that Gor would serve as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, reflecting the strategic importance of the region.

Gor has been one of Trump’s most trusted confidants, having worked on his presidential campaigns, overseen personnel decisions across federal agencies, and even published some of Trump’s best-selling books.

Trump highlighted Gor’s record, noting that under his leadership, the White House Personnel Office oversaw the hiring of nearly 4,000 federal officials in record time, with over 95% of positions now filled.

Symbolic Timing Amid Tariff Disputes

The nomination comes at a sensitive moment in U.S.-India trade relations, as Washington and New Delhi remain locked in tariff tensions. Trump emphasized the importance of appointing someone he could “fully trust” to manage America’s agenda in the world’s most populous region.

“For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda and help us make America great again,” Trump said. “Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador. Congratulations Sergio!”

Gor Responds With Gratitude

In response, Gor expressed his appreciation for the appointment, calling it the “honour of my life” to represent the United States in India.

“I am beyond grateful to President Trump for his incredible trust and confidence in nominating me,” Gor said in a post.

Vice President JD Vance also endorsed the choice, saying Gor “will make a fantastic ambassador for our country to India.”

Successor to Eric Garcetti

If confirmed by the Senate, Sergio Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, who served as U.S. Ambassador to India from May 2023 until January 2025. Until then, Gor will remain in his current White House role.
