Trump – Netanyahu Meeting

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he intends to discuss developments in Gaza and Iran during his upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, and Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of brokering a ceasefire in Gaza in the near future.

Ron Dermer, a senior Israeli official and close aide to Netanyahu, has been in Washington this week for preliminary discussions ahead of the high-level talks.

The upcoming meeting follows a joint U.S.-Israel military operation conducted in June targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. The mission, which included American B-2 bomber strikes, was described by Trump as having “obliterated” Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. However, experts remain divided over how much damage was actually inflicted on Iran’s nuclear program.

President Trump said he is hopeful that a ceasefire agreement involving the release of hostages held by Hamas can be finalized during next week’s talks. “We hope it’s going to happen. And we’re looking forward to it happening sometime next week,” he told reporters before departing for a visit to Florida. “We want to get the hostages out.”

Hamas has indicated a willingness to release the remaining hostages in Gaza as part of a broader agreement to end the conflict. However, Israel insists that the war can only conclude if Hamas is fully disarmed and dismantled—conditions the group has so far rejected.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when militants led by Hamas launched a surprise assault on Israel, killing 1,200 people and capturing 251 hostages, according to Israeli sources.

Since then, the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has resulted in more than 56,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza health ministry. The offensive has caused widespread displacement, created a hunger crisis, and led to international legal action. Israel is facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and potential war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court—allegations it strongly denies.

When asked about Dermer’s visit and meetings in Washington, a White House official stated, “Ron Dermer visits the White House regularly,” and emphasized that his engagement would continue as President Trump works toward establishing peace in the region. The official did not specify which members of Trump’s team Dermer would meet during his stay.
