Trump and Musk Clash Over Controversial Tax and Spending Bill

Trump vs Musk

President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk are in a big fight. They used to be friends, but now Trump says their friendship is probably over. The problem is a new tax and spending bill that Trump likes, but Musk hates.

In a phone call with NBC News on Saturday, Trump said there would be “serious consequences” if Musk helps Democrats who don’t like the bill. Trump didn’t say what those consequences are. He also said he doesn’t want to fix things with Musk and has no plans to talk to him. But Trump said he’s not thinking about cutting government deals with Musk’s companies, like SpaceX or StarLink.

Musk called the bill a “disgusting abomination” on social media. This made it harder for the bill to pass in Congress, where Republicans have only a small lead in the House and Senate. The bill passed the House last month and is now in the Senate. Some experts say it could add $2.4 trillion to the U.S. debt, which is already $36.2 trillion. This worries some lawmakers, but Trump thinks the bill will pass by July 4.

Musk was a big supporter of Trump’s 2024 campaign, spending almost $300 million to help Republicans win the House and Senate. Just last week, Trump praised Musk for leading a group to cut government spending. But Musk only cut a tiny bit of the budget, far less than he wanted, which added to their fight.

Things got worse when Musk deleted some social media posts that criticized Trump, including one that seemed to support kicking Trump out of office. Some people close to Musk say he’s calming down and might want to fix things with Trump. But Trump isn’t interested.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking on a podcast, said Musk made a “huge mistake” by criticizing Trump. Vance hopes Musk will come back to supporting Trump. He called Musk a great business leader.

Trump and Musk used to hang out together, like at UFC fights, but Musk won’t be at the one Trump is attending in New Jersey on Saturday. Musk also said the U.S. needs a new political party for people who don’t fully agree with either side.

Since Trump started his second term on January 20, Republicans have supported his plans. No Republican has voted against him yet, even if some have concerns. Musk’s fight with Trump could make it harder for the bill to pass in the Senate.

This fight shows how quickly things can change between Trump and Musk. It’s unclear if they’ll ever be friends again or how this will affect the bill. For now, Trump is focused on getting the bill passed, while Musk is pushing for a new way in politics.
