Washington, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he is serious about trying to serve a third term, even though the U.S. Constitution limits presidents to two terms.
“There are ways you could do it,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview, though he added, “It’s far too early to think about it.”
The 22nd Amendment, passed in 1951, states that no one can be elected president more than twice.
When asked if one way to stay in power would be for Vice President JD Vance to run and then hand over the role to him, Trump said, “That’s one way, but there are others too.” However, he refused to share other ideas.
Vance’s office did not comment on the matter.
Trump, who would be 82 at the end of a second term, said he enjoys working and believes Americans would support him staying in office. However, he exaggerated his popularity, claiming to have the highest poll numbers of any Republican in the last 100 years. Historical data shows former Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush had much higher approval ratings at certain times.
Trump has joked about serving more than two terms before, but his latest comments suggest he is seriously thinking about ways to stay in office longer.
