Tesla Enters in Indian Market
Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai. Located at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) — a prime commercial area in the city — the 4,000-square-foot Tesla Experience Centre marks a significant step in the electric vehicle (EV) giant’s global expansion.
This is Tesla’s debut retail presence in India and is likely the first of many, with plans underway to expand to other major cities such as New Delhi. The move comes as Tesla seeks new markets amid declining growth in the U.S. and China.
Where Is the Showroom and What’s Inside?
The Mumbai showroom is located in BKC, known for housing high-end offices and luxury brands. The store reportedly has a monthly rent of ₹35 lakh and features Tesla’s signature branding along with a display of its premium electric vehicle, the Model Y.
Six units of the Model Y were shipped from Tesla’s factory in Shanghai to Mumbai for the showroom’s grand launch. According to visuals shared online, final setup work was still in progress just days before opening, including the arrival of vehicles on flatbed trucks.
Tesla’s Model Y: Features & Variants
The model being showcased and offered to customers is the refreshed Model Y, Tesla’s popular all-electric SUV.
Key Features:
Available in two versions: Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD
Exterior: Sleek coupe-like design, dark grey body, black alloy wheels
Interior: Dual-tone black and white cabin
Tech:
15.4-inch touchscreen display
Wireless phone charging
USB-C ports
Voice command support

The Model Y is known for its blend of performance, advanced technology, and clean design — aiming to attract India’s rising number of luxury EV buyers.
Price in India and Import Duties
The Model Y starts at a price of ₹59.89 lakh for the RWD variant. However, this price is heavily influenced by India’s high import duties on completely built units (CBUs), which range from 70% to 100%.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has frequently criticized these tariffs, arguing they make EVs unaffordable for many Indian consumers. He has urged the Indian government to lower duties to support green mobility.
India, on the other hand, has insisted that Tesla must commit to local manufacturing before considering any reduction in taxes. As of now, there is no confirmation from Tesla about setting up a factory or assembly line in the country, though talks are ongoing.
What’s Next for Tesla in India?
Expansion Plans: After Mumbai, Tesla is expected to open outlets in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and other metro cities.
Sales Strategy: The Experience Centre will help gauge interest and gather feedback from Indian buyers.
Local Assembly Talks: Speculation continues about a possible factory in Gujarat or Maharashtra, especially if the government offers policy incentives.
