Pahalgam Terror Attack Update:
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari gave a strong warning during a rally in Sukkur, Sindh. He said if India tries to stop Pakistan’s water after suspending the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), then “blood would flow through rivers” instead of water. He was reacting to India’s decision to suspend the treaty after the Pahalgam terror attack.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 with the help of the World Bank, is an important agreement between India and Pakistan about sharing river water. It has survived many wars and tensions before — until now.
What is Indus Water Treaty?
The Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) was signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan, with the World Bank acting as a mediator. It governs the sharing of the Indus River system, which includes six major rivers. Under the treaty, India received control over the three eastern rivers — Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej — while Pakistan was given control over the three western rivers — Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab. Despite multiple wars and hostilities between the two nations, the treaty has largely held for over six decades. It is considered one of the most successful water-sharing agreements in history, ensuring vital resources for both countries.
Pakistan has officially cancelled the Simla Accord of 1972 in response to India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty
