PM Modi Pushes for Swadeshi Goods
Varanasi, August 2:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called on Indians to promote and use locally-made products, stressing that supporting “swadeshi” goods is the true way to serve the nation—especially during these times of global economic instability.
Speaking at a public meeting in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi, PM Modi highlighted the uncertain state of the global economy. “The world is facing instability and many countries are prioritising their own interests. India must do the same and remain alert as we move toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy,” he said.
His appeal comes shortly after the United States imposed 25% tariffs on exports from 70 countries, including India. These new duties are likely to affect Indian businesses and raise economic challenges.
Modi emphasized that the government continues to work for farmers, small businesses, and job creation for the youth. “However, this effort will only succeed if citizens also take responsibility,” he said.
Calling for a nationwide movement to support domestic products, the Prime Minister urged all political leaders, parties, and citizens to rise above politics and unite for India’s economic future. “This is not just about Modi saying it. Every Indian must make it a mission to build an economy powered by swadeshi goods,” he said.
He encouraged people to adopt the ‘Vocal for Local’ mindset. “Whenever we buy something, we should ask ourselves if it’s made by an Indian. If yes, then it’s swadeshi and we should choose it proudly,” Modi added.
Addressing shopkeepers and traders specifically, he said, “Let’s pledge to sell only Indian-made products in our markets. Promoting locally-made goods is the most genuine service to our country.”
With the festive and wedding seasons approaching, Modi appealed to families to prefer Indian goods over imported ones. He recalled how many Indians had changed their wedding plans from abroad to India after a similar past appeal, helping boost the domestic economy.
“The feeling of swadeshi in our daily lives will shape India’s future. It will also be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, who championed this idea during the freedom struggle,” Modi said.
He concluded by reminding citizens that only through unity and shared responsibility can India become a truly developed nation. “Together, with faith in our skills and products, we can build a stronger, self-reliant India,” he said.
