Israel Bombs Syrian Defence Ministry
Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Damascus on Wednesday, targeting key government buildings in support of the Druze minority group caught in ongoing violence in southern Syria.
One of the Israeli strikes hit the Syrian Ministry of Defense, an attack broadcast live on Syrian TV, forcing the news anchor to duck for cover. Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz later shared the footage, calling it the start of “painful blows.”
According to the Israeli military, the strikes hit both the defense ministry and an area near the presidential palace. Syria’s health ministry reported at least 13 people were injured in the attacks.
Israel says the air campaign aims to defend the Druze community, an Arab minority in Suwayda, where recent clashes broke out between Druze groups and Bedouin tribes, prompting a response from Syrian government forces.
Despite calls from the U.S. to stop the strikes, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the operations are necessary to protect both the Druze and Israel’s southern border.
“We will keep striking until the attackers of the Druze withdraw completely,” Katz said. He assured Israeli Druze that their relatives in Syria would be protected by the Israeli military
