India’s First Hydrogen Train Begins Trial Run on March 31
New Delhi, March 31:
India’s first hydrogen-powered train is set to begin its trial run today on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. This eco-friendly train, developed by Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF), marks a significant step toward green transportation.

Government Investment & Future Plans

The Indian Railways has allocated ₹2,800 crore to develop hydrogen fuel cell-based trains, with 35 such trains planned. An additional ₹600 crore is being invested in hydrogen infrastructure on heritage routes.
This initiative aligns with India’s zero-carbon emissions goal, as hydrogen trains produce only water vapor as a byproduct. The trial will assess the train’s technical performance and safety before regular operations begin. If successful, these trains will be deployed on heritage and hilly routes under the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ project.
This marks a major step in India’s efforts to promote clean, sustainable transport while modernizing its railway system.

Key Features of the Hydrogen Train

  • Route: Jind to Sonipat (89 km)
  • Speed: Can run at up to 110 km per hour
  • Capacity: Can carry 2,638 passengers at a time
  • Coaches: Includes a passenger section and two dedicated coaches for hydrogen storage
  • Power: 1,200 horsepower
