India Imposes Tough Measures Against Pakistan After Pahalgam Terror Attack

Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India has announced a strong measure against Pakistan. According to a notification from the Ministry of Commerce, until further orders, there will be restrictions on both direct and indirect imports and transportation of all goods coming from or going to Pakistan. This decision has been taken keeping in view national security and public policy.

In another order from the Directorate General of Shipping, it has been stated that ships flying the Pakistani flag will not be allowed entry into any Indian port. This directive has been issued to ensure the safety of Indian assets, cargo, and strategic installations, as well as to protect public interest and the interests of Indian maritime operations.

Pak Ships Banned at Indian Ports; All Imports Halted

As tensions between India and Pakistan rise, New Delhi had earlier announced the suspension of trade via the Attari-Wagah border. Pakistan, in turn, has also halted all trade with India. After the Pulwama attack in 2019, where more than 40 Indian soldiers were martyred, India had withdrawn Pakistan’s Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status, leading to a steep decline in bilateral trade.

In 2023–24, trade worth ₹3,886.53 crore took place through the Attari-Wagah border. India’s latest move is expected to severely impact small businesses and manufacturers in Pakistan. In recent years, while direct imports from Pakistan were negligible, some goods had been routed through ports like Dubai, Singapore, and Colombo to bypass trade restrictions. However, Pakistan remains dependent on India for pharmaceutical supplies. With all trade now suspended, Pakistan has begun searching for alternative sources to meet its medicine needs.

Pakistan Responds with Ballistic Missile Test

Amid rising tensions, Pakistan conducted a test of the Ababeel ballistic missile, capable of striking targets up to 450 km away. The test was part of a military exercise named “Exercise Indus” and was carried out under the Army Strategic Forces Command at the Sonmiani Range.

The Pakistan Army stated the test aimed to ensure operational readiness against any threats. However, India has condemned the move, calling it a reckless and provocative escalation.

In addition, Pakistan has intensified naval exercises in the Arabian Sea and violated ceasefire agreements along the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border. Reports indicate heavy military buildup, including the deployment of air defense and artillery units, near the border.

Modern radar systems have also been installed near Langewala in Rajasthan, highlighting the growing military alertness on both sides.
