India Signs ₹63,000 Crore Deal with France for Rafale Marine Jets

India and France have signed a big defence deal worth ₹63,000 crore to buy 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets. The agreement was signed on Monday at the Defence Ministry headquarters in New Delhi, according to the Indian Navy. Earlier this month, the Cabinet Committee on Security had approved the deal.

France was represented by its Ambassador to India, while Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh led the Indian side. Both countries’ Defence Ministers also took part in the event remotely, as the French Defence Minister had to cancel his visit for personal reasons.

The Indian Navy needs new fighter jets urgently because its old MiG-29K aircraft are facing maintenance problems. The new Rafale Marine jets will mainly be used on INS Vikrant, India’s first home-built aircraft carrier.

The deal includes 22 single-seater and 4 twin-seater Rafale M jets, which have been specially modified to fit Indian needs and work with Indian carriers. It also comes with a full support package that covers maintenance, spare parts, training, and some manufacturing of parts in India.

The new Rafale M jets will operate alongside the MiG-29K fighters on INS Vikrant, boosting the Navy’s strength.

The Indian Air Force already uses 36 Rafale jets bought in 2016, which are based at Ambala and Hasimara. With this new deal, India’s total Rafale fleet will increase to 62 aircraft, giving a big boost to the country’s 4.5-generation fighter jet strength.
