India Overtakes China in iPhone Exports to U.S

India has made big news in the tech world by overtaking China in sending iPhones to the United States. In April 2025, India shipped around 2.9 million iPhones to the U.S., which is a 76% increase compared to the same time last year. Meanwhile, China’s iPhone shipments dropped by 76%, going down to only 900,000 units from 3.7 million in April 2024.

This change shows that Apple is moving a lot of its production from China to India. One of the main reasons for this shift is the growing political tensions between the U.S. and China, as well as new trade tariffs that make Chinese products more expensive in the U.S. Apple wants to reduce its risk by depending less on one country. That’s why it’s expanding production in India.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that by the end of June 2025, most iPhones in the market will be made in India. From January to April 2025, Apple shipped 11.5 million iPhones to the U.S. from India. During the same time, China shipped slightly more — 13.2 million. But with the way things are going, India is quickly catching up and may soon become the top iPhone supplier.

Experts believe that India could provide up to 80% of the iPhones needed in the U.S. by the end of 2026. The average demand in the U.S. is about 20 million iPhones every three months. So, this is a big opportunity for India.

This growth in iPhone production is supported by huge investments. Foxconn, Apple’s main manufacturing partner, has invested £1.5 billion into its factory in Chennai. It has also opened a new plant in Karnataka, which is expected to start shipping iPhones by June 2025. Another important partner, Tata Electronics, has also increased its production.

India’s rise as a smartphone manufacturing hub is good news for its economy. It supports the Indian government’s “Make in India” campaign, which encourages companies to build products in India.

In summary, India’s iPhone exports are growing fast, while China’s numbers are falling. With strong support from Apple and its suppliers, India is on track to become one of the world’s biggest smartphone makers. This could change the global tech manufacturing scene in the coming years.
