India vs Pakistan: Asia Cup 2025
By Eastern Times Sports Desk
New Delhi, July 2 — Despite the heightened tensions following the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam earlier this year, the Asia Cup 2025 will go ahead as planned, beginning on September 5 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The decision reaffirms the organizers’ commitment to cricket, even amid strained political circumstances.
One of the tournament’s most awaited encounters, the India-Pakistan clash, is scheduled for September 7. The rivalry, steeped in history and passion, is expected to draw global viewership and immense public interest.
UAE Named Neutral Host; BCCI Retains Administrative Control
Originally scheduled to be hosted by India, the tournament has been shifted to the UAE due to continued diplomatic strain between India and Pakistan. The two nations have maintained a mutual stance of not touring each other’s territories. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will retain full hosting rights, overseeing operations and logistics in coordination with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
The 17-day tournament will feature six participating nations: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the United Arab Emirates. All matches will be played in the T20 International (T20I) format, serving as critical preparation for the T20 World Cup scheduled for 2026.
Tournament Format and Schedule
The Asia Cup will follow a familiar structure, starting with a group stage that will filter into the Super Four round. The grand finale is set to be played on September 21, concluding what promises to be a high-stakes cricketing event.
Security Concerns and Official Clarifications
Following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, speculation had been rife regarding India’s possible withdrawal from the Asia Cup. However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed such reports, stating:
“The Asia Cup or any ACC event has not been discussed at any level. Our focus remains on the IPL and the upcoming England series.”
Saikia’s comments have quelled rumors and reaffirmed India’s commitment to participating in the continental championship.
Awaiting Government Clearance
While the schedule and venues have been finalized, the participation of teams — particularly India and Pakistan — remains subject to government approvals. Diplomatic clearance is being sought by both nations, with internal consultations underway regarding travel permissions and security protocols.
As the countdown to the Asia Cup begins, cricket fans across the subcontinent await what is expected to be a fiercely contested and closely watched tournament — one that brings the region together through the spirit of the game, even amid challenging times.
