Vedanta University in Puri: Anil Agarwal’s Bold Vision to Build India’s Harvard for Global Education
Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta Limited, has reignited efforts to establish a world-class university in Puri, Odisha, citing the recent restrictions imposed by Donald Trump on Harvard University as a unique opportunity for India to strengthen its position in global higher education. Sharing his vision on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Agarwal emphasized the need for India to build institutions on par with Harvard and MIT. He proposed a non-profit, digital-first university in Puri that would attract top-tier faculty and students from around the world, with full scholarships for underprivileged students.
He stressed that land should not become a barrier in building such a transformative institution, which he believes will significantly benefit society and position India as a leader in research and knowledge.
Agarwal’s pursuit of the Vedanta University project dates back to 2006, when Vedanta signed an MoU with the Odisha government to construct the university along the Puri-Konark Marine Drive. The then BJD-BJP state government had acquired land for the project.
However, resistance from displaced families led to legal battles, and the Odisha High Court canceled the land acquisition in 2010, citing irregularities, including repeated changes in the proposed institution’s name. In 2023, the Supreme Court upheld this decision, leading to the return of the land to its original owners. Despite these setbacks, Agarwal remains committed to his vision and continues to advocate for the university’s establishment in Puri.
