Harvard-funding
U.S President Donald Trump has immediately halted Harvard University’s $2.2 billion federal funding, citing the university’s failure to prevent growing antisemitism and pro-Palestine demonstrations. Trump claimed that this failure amounts to a violation of federal law and said that such institutions have no right to receive government funding.
The Trump administration accused Harvard of showing bias against Jewish students and professors. After becoming President, Trump began reviewing the $9 billion in federal aid that Harvard receives.
Along with this, the Trump administration had asked Harvard to implement certain policy changes and warned that failure to comply would result in the termination of funding. The situation escalated after some Harvard professors filed lawsuits against Trump, calling his actions unconstitutional and an attack on the university’s autonomy
some notable reactions:
Former U.S. President Barack Obama recently praised Harvard University for standing up against what he called an “unlawful and heavy-handed” effort to limit academic freedom. He said Harvard sets a good example for other universities by encouraging open debate, serious thinking, and making all students feel included.
Harvard’s President, Alan Garber, strongly criticized the government’s decision to freeze the university’s funding. He called it “unprecedented” and said that no government should control what a private university teaches or how it admits students and does research. Garber also said Harvard is serious about fighting antisemitism but believes the government’s demands go against the Constitution and are an abuse of power.
Other U.S. academic leaders, like Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber, also spoke out. They warned that this kind of move is a major threat to academic freedom, comparing it to past political attacks on education, like during the Red Scare. Faculty groups at Harvard and elsewhere have even taken legal action, claiming the funding cuts violate their First Amendment rights.
