Dhoni’s explosive finish in CSK vs LSG -ipl 2025
With a powerful batting performance by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 5 wickets in the 30th match of the ongoing IPL. Chasing a target of 167 runs set by Lucknow, Chennai reached the target with 3 balls to spare, despite facing some tough moments during the chase. On Monday, along with Dhoni, impact player Shivam Dube also played a crucial role.
After suffering five consecutive defeats, Chennai has returned to winning ways. However, despite achieving their second win in seven matches, the team could not rise from the bottom of the points table. On the other hand, this was the third loss for Lucknow in their seven matches.
While chasing 167, Chennai changed their opening pair, sending out Sheikh Rasid (27) and Rachin Ravindra (37) to start the innings. The duo gave a solid start, adding 52 runs for the first wicket. But later, regular fall of wickets saw Chennai struggling at 111/5.
At that moment, Dhoni showcased his trademark explosive batting. Partnering with Shivam Dube (43* off 37 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes), he brought Chennai back into the game. When 56 runs were needed from the final 5 overs, Dube and Dhoni (26* off 11 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) went into attack mode and led Chennai to victory with 3 balls to spare. The powerful finish brought smiles back to the fans, as Dhoni and Shivam remained unbeaten, adding 57* runs for the sixth wicket.
Chennai had won the toss and invited Lucknow to bat first. In the powerplay, CSK bowlers dismissed openers Aiden Markram (6) and the dangerous Nicholas Pooran (8), justifying Dhoni’s decision to bowl first. However, captain Rishabh Pant (63 off 49 balls, 4 fours, 4 sixes) anchored the innings with his first half-century of the season, taking Lucknow to a respectable total of 166/7. After failing in the previous six matches, Pant started slowly but later picked up pace, reaching his fifty in 42 balls.
Among others, Mitchell Marsh (30 off 25), Ayush Badoni (22 off 17), and Abdul Samad (20 off 11) made quick contributions. In the final overs, Chennai bowled tight and fielded well, preventing Lucknow from accelerating further.
