Renault to Acquire Nissan’s Stake in Indian Joint Venture
New Delhi, March 31: French automotive giant Renault has announced its decision to acquire Nissan’s 51% stake in their Indian joint venture, Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL), thereby gaining full ownership of the company. The deal, which comes as part of a broader global framework agreement between Renault Group and Nissan, will make Renault the sole proprietor of the Chennai-based manufacturing facility.
Although the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the move signifies a major restructuring of the Renault-Nissan partnership in India. The Chennai plant, which has been instrumental in manufacturing vehicles for both Renault and Nissan brands, will now be solely operated by Renault, marking a new chapter in the company’s operations in India.

Background and Significance

The Renault-Nissan alliance has been one of the most significant partnerships in the global automobile industry. The two companies have shared production facilities, technology, and market strategies across various regions, including India. The Chennai manufacturing facility, established in 2008, has played a crucial role in producing popular models for both brands, such as the Renault Kwid, Nissan Magnite, and Renault Triber.
With this latest development, Renault is expected to take full control of manufacturing operations, which could lead to changes in production strategy, product lineup, and investment plans. Nissan’s decision to exit the joint venture aligns with its recent strategy of streamlining operations and focusing on core markets.
