Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday advocated reconsidering India’s population control approach, suggesting a three-child norm to preserve the country’s demographic edge and future workforce strength.

Speaking on the importance of fertility rates, Naidu said population trends would play a decisive role in shaping India’s global standing. “Today I want to talk about the importance of fertility rate. It is very important for our future,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister argued that a larger and younger workforce is essential for economic growth and global leadership. Pointing to the success of Indians abroad, he said that the Indian diaspora is among the highest earners in several countries, reflecting the potential of India’s human capital.
Naidu cautioned that strict population control policies of the past may now need a rethink, warning that India could otherwise face challenges similar to aging societies in parts of East Asia and Europe. “If we don’t act in time, we may lose our demographic advantage,” he said. chandrababu
He emphasized that policies should focus not just on numbers, but also on education, skills, and health, so that population growth translates into economic strength rather than burden.
Naidu’s remarks have sparked debate at a time when India’s fertility rate is already nearing replacement levels, raising questions about the balance between population stability and sustaining long-term growth. chandrababu
