Chinese FM Wang Yi to Visit India for Key Talks with Jaishankar, Doval, and PM Modi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in New Delhi on Monday for a two-day official visit aimed at improving India-China relations, which remain strained since the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that Wang’s visit will include high-level bilateral meetings with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar, boundary talks with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Focus on Restoring Trust

Relations between India and China have faced significant challenges since the deadly clashes in Galwan Valley. Both countries are now exploring new confidence-building measures to ensure lasting peace and stability along their disputed border.

“During his visit, Wang Yi will hold the 24th round of the Special Representatives’ (SR) Talks on the India-China boundary question with NSA Shri Ajit Doval,” the MEA said in its statement.

Wang Yi’s Schedule in India

According to the MEA, Wang will land in New Delhi at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Soon after, at 6 p.m., he will meet with EAM Jaishankar for detailed bilateral discussions.

On Tuesday morning at 11 a.m., Wang and NSA Doval will hold a fresh round of boundary talks under the Special Representatives mechanism, which was revived last year following a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia.

Later, at 5:30 p.m., Wang Yi will call on Prime Minister Modi at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg.

Key Issues on the Agenda

The talks are expected to cover a wide range of issues, including:

  • The border situation and confidence-building measures

  • Bilateral trade opportunities

  • Possible resumption of direct flight services between India and China

The visit comes at a time when global and regional dynamics are shifting. U.S. President Donald Trump recently doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, adding a further 25 percent penalty on account of India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. This backdrop adds urgency to India-China discussions on trade and strategic stability.

Recent Engagements and Momentum

This round of high-level exchanges builds on last year’s efforts. In December, NSA Doval traveled to China for boundary talks with Wang Yi. Additionally, both Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and EAM Jaishankar have recently visited China for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)-related engagements.

Wang Yi’s visit comes just ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s planned trip to China later this month for the SCO summit, signaling an important phase in India-China diplomacy.
