WhatsApp Says Russia Blocking Service Over Encrypted Messaging
WhatsApp has accused Russia of trying to block its platform because it offers people the right to secure, encrypted communication. The Meta-owned messaging app vowed to continue providing end-to-end encrypted services to users in Russia despite growing government restrictions.
According to WhatsApp, the Russian government is attempting to restrict the service from over 100 million people. “WhatsApp is private, end-to-end encrypted, and defies government attempts to violate people’s right to secure communication, which is why Russia is trying to block it,” the company said in a statement. “We will keep doing all we can to make end-to-end encrypted communication available to people everywhere, including in Russia.”
Russian authorities have recently begun restricting certain Telegram and WhatsApp calls, accusing the platforms of failing to share information with law enforcement in cases related to fraud and terrorism.
Telegram, another widely used messaging app in Russia, stated that it is using AI tools to monitor public channels and remove millions of harmful messages daily. “Telegram actively combats harmful use of its platform including calls for sabotage or violence and fraud,” the company said.
Tensions between Russia and foreign tech companies have been escalating for years, particularly over content regulation and data storage rules. The dispute intensified after Moscow sent its military into Ukraine in February 2022, with critics claiming that Russia is seeking to tighten control over its internet space.
