Gunman Kills 4 Including NYPD Officer at NYC Office Tower Before Taking Own Life

NYC shooting

In a horrifying act of violence, a man armed with an M4 rifle opened fire inside a Manhattan office tower on Monday, killing four people—including an off-duty New York City police officer—and injuring another before fatally shooting himself.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at a Park Avenue building that houses major financial firms and the National Football League offices.

Slain Officer Identified as Didarul Islam
The NYPD identified the officer killed as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served with the department for over three years. He leaves behind a wife, two young children, and a third on the way.

“He died as he lived. A hero,” said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, visibly emotional during the press briefing.

Shooter Identified, Motive Unclear
The suspect was named as Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas resident with a documented mental health history. He reportedly arrived in a BMW, exited with an M4 rifle, and opened fire at the building’s entrance, immediately targeting the officer. He then shot multiple people in the lobby before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he killed one more victim before ending his own life.

Authorities are still investigating the motive and why this location was chosen.

Details of the Attack

  • A woman in the lobby and a security guard were among those killed.

  • A fifth victim remains in critical condition.

  • Surveillance footage and tracking evidence confirm Tamura acted alone.

  • A revolver, rifle case, magazines, and extra ammunition were found in his car.

Witness Accounts
Jessica Chen, who was attending a presentation on the second floor, described hearing multiple gunshots. “We were honestly really, really scared,” she said, adding that they barricaded themselves inside a conference room.

Outside, panicked crowds ran from the building. TV footage showed evacuations with people holding their hands up.

Security Presence at the Building
The building had NYPD officers working paid security assignments as part of a special detail program. Police believe the gunman bypassed other officers as he carried out the attack.

Mayor and Officials Respond
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that “five innocent people were shot” in addition to the shooter. He added that officials are still “unraveling” the events that led to this tragedy.
