Russia’s Largest Drone Attack on Kyiv
Kyiv, July 4 — In the most intense aerial assault since the beginning of the war, Russia struck Ukraine’s capital with a massive swarm of drones and missiles overnight, killing one person, injuring at least 23 others, and causing widespread destruction. The attack came just hours after a reported phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising alarm over escalating tensions and the war’s direction.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched an unprecedented 539 Iranian-made kamikaze drones along with 11 missiles in a coordinated bombardment that lasted from early evening until dawn. The raid triggered constant air raid sirens, explosions, and the whine of drones across multiple districts in Kyiv, terrifying residents and overwhelming air defenses.
Ukraine’s air defense systems managed to shoot down 478 aerial threats, but dozens still breached the skies, striking residential areas, schools, medical facilities, and foreign diplomatic buildings. Over 40 structures were damaged, including high-rise apartments and critical infrastructure. One civilian was confirmed dead, and 23 more were reported injured, some critically.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the assault as “unlike anything the capital has faced before,” while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as “Russia’s latest act of terror” and urged Western allies to deliver more advanced air-defense systems without delay.
The assault occurred shortly after U.S. President Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Although the contents of the call have not been made public, the timing of the attack has raised questions about Russia’s strategic intentions and confidence amid shifting international dynamics.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called for immediate global condemnation and stronger sanctions against Moscow, emphasizing the need for an emergency UN Security Council session.
“This is a deliberate escalation aimed at breaking our spirit and exploiting political distractions in the West,” Kuleba said. “The world must not look away.”
This latest escalation underscores both the scale of Russia’s offensive capabilities and Ukraine’s urgent need for sustained military and humanitarian support. With no end to the war in sight, Kyiv remains on high alert as citizens brace for what could be a prolonged summer of intensified strikes
