Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s trademark Captain cool
Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has officially applied for the trademark of the nickname ‘Captain Cool’, a title fans have affectionately used for years to describe his calm and composed leadership style.
Dhoni now seeks exclusive rights to use the name ‘Captain Cool’ for sports training, coaching services, and training centres. His lawyer, Mansi Aggarwal, called it a notable moment in trademark law, highlighting how personal branding and public recognition can help overcome legal challenges.
However, the process wasn’t smooth. The Trademark Registry initially raised an objection under Section 11(1) of the Trade Marks Act, arguing that the phrase could cause confusion due to the existence of a similar registered mark.
In response, Dhoni’s legal team explained that ‘Captain Cool’ has become strongly associated with him. The nickname, they said, has been used by fans and media for years and is now a well-known part of his public identity.
Aggarwal added that since the trademark would be used for services related to sports and entertainment, there was very little risk of confusion with any existing brand. The Registry eventually agreed, noting that ‘Captain Cool’ is more than just a nickname—it’s a symbol of Dhoni’s long-standing image and reputation in the cricketing world.
The application was officially accepted and advertised by the Trade Marks Registry and was published in the official journal on June 16, 2025.
This move reflects how celebrities can use trademark law to protect their identity and brand in the business world, especially when a nickname has gained wide public recognition over time.
