Indian Youth from Haryana Detained at US airport
New Delhi, June 11 — India has expressed concern to the United States following a disturbing incident at Newark Liberty International Airport, where an Indian national from Haryana was handcuffed and allegedly treated like a criminal while being deported. According to official sources, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has raised the matter directly with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi.
The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed that the individual had entered the United States illegally, lacking a valid visa. His deportation was being carried out in accordance with a U.S. court order. The incident drew widespread attention after videos of the man being restrained by U.S. authorities at Newark airport surfaced online and went viral across social media platforms.
An Indian-American eyewitness, Kunal Jain, recorded the footage and shared it on social media, expressing deep anguish over the treatment of the Indian youth. Jain described the incident as heartbreaking and said he felt helpless watching it unfold.
According to the Indian government, the individual’s behavior during transit was reportedly deemed “not conducive for travel,” prompting U.S. officials to restrain him for security reasons. Following this, he was admitted to a medical facility for evaluation and care.
“Once he is deemed medically fit to travel, he will be deported back to India,” the official sources added.
Both the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. and the Consulate in New York have been in close contact with U.S. authorities to clarify the details surrounding the incident. They are seeking complete information about the reasons for the man’s restraint, the exact circumstances at the airport, the flight he was scheduled to board, and the nature of his final travel arrangements.
Earlier in the day, sources within the MEA acknowledged the lack of clarity regarding several aspects of the incident. “We have so far not received complete details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained,” a senior official said.
The Indian Consulate in New York remains actively engaged with U.S. officials to ensure the individual’s rights are respected and that the situation is handled appropriately moving forward.
While the man in question had violated U.S. immigration laws by entering the country without valid documentation, Indian officials underscored the need for humane treatment during deportation proceedings, particularly when it involves Indian citizens.
This episode has triggered a broader discussion on the treatment of undocumented immigrants during deportation processes and the responsibility of law enforcement to uphold human dignity, even in cases involving legal violations.
The MEA reiterated its commitment to the welfare of Indian nationals abroad and assured that every effort is being made to gather facts and extend necessary consular support.
As public reaction to the video continues to build, diplomatic channels remain open between New Delhi and Washington, with Indian authorities pressing for transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
